Ombudsman and Commissioner for Education visit KSU Freshers’ Week at the University of Malta

The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, together with the Commissioner for Education, Chief Justice Emeritus Vincent A. De Gaetano, visited Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) Freshers’ Week at the University of Malta.
They were welcomed by KSU Education Officer Sean Azzopardi, who accompanied them around the event and introduced them to a number of participating organisations and initiatives.
During the visit, the Ombudsman and the Commissioner met students, representatives of student organisations and public entities, gaining an overview of the range of services and opportunities being presented to students at the start of the academic year.
They also visited the Office of the Ombudsman’s stand, where members of staff were providing information about the role of the Parliamentary Ombudsman and the Commissioner for Education. The stand gives students an opportunity to learn more about the Office, their rights when dealing with the public administration, and the assistance available when they believe they have been treated unfairly by a public authority.
Participation in Freshers’ Week is an important part of the Office’s outreach among younger generations. Engaging directly with students helps increase awareness of independent oversight and of the mechanisms available to safeguard fairness and good administration.
This year, the Office of the Ombudsman participated in Freshers’ events at the University of Malta, MCAST, the Institute of Tourism Studies and the Institute for Education. The Commissioner for Education also visited Freshers’ Week at G.F. Abela Junior College.
As the Freshers’ programme of activities draws to a close, the Parliamentary Ombudsman and the Commissioner for Education wish all students, academics and staff a productive and successful academic year.
